Now, if you’re new to the world of samurai swords, allow us to explain why this type of weapon is essential to your collection. With its rich history and unique visual design, the samurai longsword is a must-have.
The History of the Samurai Katana
The samurai katana is a Japanese longsword that’s been used since the 1330s. In fact, the word “katana” translates to longsword. For a sword to be considered a samurai katana, it must have a blade that’s taller than 60 inches and it must have a grip that can accommodate two hands as the ancient fighting style requires that both hands be used. Additionally, the blade must be extremely thin and have a curved shape.
This unique sword design was developed in order to accommodate close combat fighting. The samurai needed to be able to quickly draw his sword and take out his opponent with a single slash, which is why the blade has that particular curve and why it’s so thin. If it were too heavy, it would require too much effort to maneuver, resulting in potentially deadly consequences.
The samurai katana evolved over the following centuries as its blade continued to grow in terms of length and its design became more and more refined. Like most types of swords used throughout history, the design was consistently improved upon due to growing combat-related needs.
In 1876, it became illegal to carry a katana in a public space. Because of this, the katana became a less and less popular product over the following years, putting many reputable swordsmiths out of business. These days, swordsmiths in Japan are required to undergo intensive training before they may manufacture and sell katanas.
However, in other parts of the world, the tradition continues with fewer restrictions. Today, weapon enthusiasts can purchase exceptionally crafted samurai katanas as collectible items.
How Samurai Katanas are Produced
A true samurai katana must be made from tamahagane, a unique type of Japanese metal that is produced by layering steel with varying levels of carbon. This labor-intensive process removes impurities from the metal. It also allows the blade to be incredibly strong despite how slim it is. Because this type of metal has more oxygen in it, it can be more easily manipulated and stretched while it’s shaped and hammered.
In order for the samurai katana to get its signature curved shape, it must be covered in a slurry consisting of clay and water. This process is known as “tsuchioki.” This mixture of materials hardens the blade so that while the blade is heated, its shape can be changed without it breaking. The unique heating process that’s used allows the blade to become soft, producing that signature line that runs along the side. This line is known as the “hamon” and distinguishes authentic katanas from reproductions.
From there, the blade's polished which can take several weeks. It’s then given a mirror finish and attached to the grip.
